  1. Why is “ex-lax” (70 across) “tense”? And can someone enlighten me as to why “beginner” (35 across) is “tiro”?

    Re TENSE
    I took it that the clue was being a little whimsical “Ex-lax?”, meaning something or someone that used to be lax, was not tense. So now, the person is no longer lax, and is therefore now TENSE.

    Re TIRO
    This is more usually spelled ‘tyro’, and means a novice or a beginner.
