6A Environmental concern in Dr. Seuss’s “The Lorax” : SMOG
“The Lorax” is a 1971 children’s book written by Dr. Seuss. It is an allegorical work questioning the problems created by industrialization, and in particular its impact on the environment. At one point in the story, the Lorax “speaks for the trees, for the trees have no tongues”. “The Lorax” was adapted into an animated film that was released in 2012, with Danny DeVito voicing the title character.
He was shortish, and oldish, and brownish and mossy. And he spoke with a voice that was sharpish and bossy.

When Excel was extended to Windows, Lotus was slow to respond and Microsoft took over the market.

37A Layout of solar panels, e.g. : ARRAY
Solar panels are arrays of solar cells that make use of what’s known as the photovoltaic effect. We are more likely to have learned about the photoelectric effect in school, in which electrons were ejected from the surface of some materials when it was exposed to light or other forms of radiation. The photovoltaic effect is related but different. Instead of being electrons ejected from the surface, in the photovoltaic effect electrons move around in the material creating a difference in voltage.
38A Elvis Costello hit featured in “Notting Hill” : SHE
While often associated with Elvis Costello due to its prominent feature in the film “Notting Hill”, “She” was actually written by Charles Aznavour and Herbert Kretzmer in 1974. Aznavour himself recorded the original version, which became a number one hit in the UK. Costello’s cover was released in 1999.
Elvis Costello is an English singer and songwriter whose real name is Declan MacManus. 41A Precursor of the International Space Station : MIR
Russia’s Mir space station was a remarkably successful project. It held the record for the longest continuous human presence in space at just under 10 years, until the International Space Station eclipsed that record in 2010. Towards the end of the space station’s life however, the years began to take their toll. There was a dangerous fire, multiple system failures, and a collision with a resupply ship. The Russian commitment to the International Space Station drained funds for repairs, so Mir was allowed to reenter the Earth’s atmosphere and burn up in 2001. “Mir” is a Russian word meaning “peace” or “world”.
The International Space Station (ISS) is a modular facility that comprises components launched into space by Russian Proton and Soyuz rockets, and by American Space Shuttles. The station has been occupied by astronauts and scientists continually since November, 2000.

Badlands may be “bad lands” for agriculture (hence the name), but they can be beautiful. A badlands is an extensive area from which the topsoil has been eroded by wind and water, leaving exposed rock and very little vegetation. One of the most beautiful badlands in the US is preserved for the nation as South Dakota’s Badlands National Park.

Images of Gorbachev and Reagan were everywhere in Russia back then …

In French, one can see “étoiles” (stars) in the “ciel” (sky).
The Alpha Centauri star system is a mere 4.37 light-years from the Sun, making it the closest star system to our solar system. Sometimes referred to as the closest “star”, Alpha Centauri is actually a binary star system, with two stars orbiting a common center. It is likely that Alpha Centauri is in fact a triple star system, as a third star called Proxima Centauri was discovered in 1915 that is probably linked gravitationally. It is Proxima Centauri that is actually the closest star to our own solar system, being just 4.24 light-years from the Sun.
