The Bruins are the athletic teams representing the University of California, Los Angeles. When the school was founded in 1919, as the Southern Branch of the University of California, the nickname “Cubs” was used by the football team.   1. 24:05, no errors. I was running late last night, so I didn’t look at this one until now, and I’m glad for it. I found it pretty thoughtful and not a puzzle to approach at the end of a long day. (In other words, perhaps: a typical Sam Ezersky puzzle and a worthy challenge for a Saturday morning! … 🙂)

  2. 47:29, no errors. Took two cups of coffee to get through this. The NW corner was the last to fall. I was pretty sure UCLA’s win streak record hadn’t been broken, but putting UPDO in 2D made things tricky for me. Connecting ‘Home in the country’ with US EMBASSY was a stretch and never heard of CHLOE ZHAO (too recent a cultural reference).

    All in all, just happy to finish.
