The acronym “TED” stands for “Technology, Entertainment and Design”. TED is a set of conferences held around the world by a non-profit group called the Sapling Foundation. The conference subjects are varied, and the meetings are often led by big names such as Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Bill Gates and Jane Goodall. The Sapling Foundation then makes recordings of the conferences available for free online with the intent of disseminating the ideas globally. These conferences are known as “TED Talks”. There are also TEDx events, which are locally-run talks presented under license from TED.

The IMAX Corporation, which is behind the IMAX film format, is a Canadian company. The impetus for developing the system came after Expo ’67 in Montreal. Back then large format screenings were accomplished using multiple projectors with multiple screens, with images basically stitched together. The team behind the IMAX technology set out to simplify things, and developed a single-camera, single-projector system.

Work started on what was to become the first “Oxford English Dictionary” (OED) in 1857. Several interim versions of the dictionary were published in the coming years with the first full version appearing, in ten bound volumes, in 1928. The second edition of the OED appeared in 1989 and is made up of twenty volumes. The OED was first published in electronic form in 1988 and went online in 2000. Given the modern use of computers, the publishing house responsible feels that there will never be a third print version of the famous dictionary.

“SNAFU” is an acronym standing for “situation normal: all fouled up” (well, that’s the polite version!). As one might perhaps imagine, the term developed in the US Army, during WWII.

  1. Never figured out the trick with the punctuation clues. Got those the old fashioned way…with crosses. 16:53 and glad to be done.

  2. 13:29, no errors. Lost significant time because REAL THINGS fit in 28D. Completely whiffed on the theme. Grateful to Bill for pointing these things out.

  3. 24:01 had “Arby’s” before “delis” for 43 across, gimmick was lost on me until coming here, thanks Bill 👍

    The theme could be doubled. How many one-named singers can you use in a crossword. Holy cow batman!

    Never got to the theme anyway.

  5. Clever theme, a good Wednesday puzzle. Slash was the revealer for me as an old G & R fan – emphasis on old????

  6. One minor comment: ref 41-Down: the thing about holding the palm of the hand facing you: it would make no difference whether the palm is facing you or turned away from you: the radius is still below the thumb and the ulna is still below the pinky. Like I say: minor
